Breckenridge, Colorado
In a few days, the voters of Breckenridge will decide whether marijuana should be legal for all adults in the mountain town.
Well, sort of. Even if the measure passes (which it seems likely to do), possession of marijuana is still illegal in Colorado (unless you are authorized to use medicinal marijuana) and under federal law. The administration's recent policy shift tolerating marijuana users who comply with state law will not have any protection for the Breckenridge law, which will indeed conflict with both state and federal laws.
Other cities around the country (including Denver) have passed laws lowering the priority of marijuana crimes, but since state and federal laws trump local codes, the actions are merely symbolic.
Still, supporters of marijuana legalization are encouraged by Breckenridge's pending law and note that this may be the first city to legalize pot paraphernalia as well. Most encouraging to many legalization proponents, and perhaps most alarming to those who do not support legalization, is the implication that perhaps the nation's mood on marijuana is slowly changing.

They're removing another brick in the wall of prohibition in Breckenridge. Slowly, but surely, it will come down. Hard drug use in places where its legal is much lower than it is here.

In America 5% of all cannabis users are medical marijuana patients.(1/3 in legal states)
95% of all cannabis users are recreational users and these are healthy people living with no long term health problems associated with its use.
If you want to talk about health concerns, be concerned with pharmaceuticals. Have you heard the stories about Vicodon, Vioxx, Valium?
Even Tylenol kills people. Pharmaceutical products and profits are problems that need control and regulation. Marijuana is not part of that picture.

Voters who vote for legalization will be doing the right thing.
To merely 'decriminalize' would put cannabis where beer was in the 1920s.... when we arrested bootleggers but not drinkers. For 13 years we endured a lucrative, violent, illegal market, a market that disappeared only when beer was fully legal in 1933.
For every wimp like Paulie, there are a thousand people like me who will DEFINITELY be coming to Breckenridge for a vacation. Don't worry, you'll make a lot more money by passing this. Spring break! Why is it that the people who are against marijuana decriminalization, believe so because they are afraid that the country will tip over if Marijuana is introduced to it in a legal way?

I am completely in favor of everything legalization would allow. However, it is worthless as long as it contradicts state and federal law. Kind of seems like stoner logic to think this symbolic act will make any difference. Tackle the whole issue and make a real difference on a state and national level. Unfortunately, I will vote against this half-baked law.
The prohibition of marijuana is a radically failed public policy. Something like 40 billion dollars a year is spent to stop 5 to 10 percent of the drugs from coming into the country. Those who radically oppose the legalization of marijuana for adults would do well to loook at the analogue in the prohbition of alchohol. Alcoholism when higher during prohibition, teen use of alcohol went higher during prohibition. Prohibition had the exact opposite effect than what was intended.
Any data set shows that the war on drugs is an unmitigated failure, and the idea that some puritans have the right under the law to tell other adults what they can and can't put into their bodies is just...well...galactically retarded!
Of course this is a symbolic gesture. The author is right though. It is a sign of changing times. You people who what the federal government (read DEAth) to be morality police who control what I put in my body...get out of the way, or get crushed by the changing times!
