ACLU wittily defends ACLUSUX proposed license plate

Kelly Coffman-Lee's rejected vanity plate idea.

Coming on the heels of the much-publicized rejection of an ILUVTOFU Colorado license plate (the plate was rejected for possible sexual overtones), State Senator Greg Brophy joked that he wanted a vanity license plate that reads ACLUSUX. Brophy made the remark after the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) requested records from the Colorado Department of Revenue of those people whose vanity plate requests had been rejected because they were deemed as being too offensive.

Lynn Bartels, political blogger for the Denver Post, reports that  the ACLU responded to Brophy’s comment with a letter from ACLU of Colorado Executive Director Cathryn Hazouri:

If you apply for that license and are refused, please contact the ACLU because we stand ready to represent you if you want to pursue your right to have that license plate. . . After all, censorship is censorship and the ACLU doesn’t draw any distinction between speech with which we agree and speech we may not like. That would be content discrimination and would violate one of our major principles of protecting free speech."

Well played.

To me the ACLU is everything right about this country. It's so disturbing to me that more Americans don't understand the importance of personal freedom. It's like they don't understand the basic principles that America was founded on.

Senator Brophy is too stupid to understand that he just got pawned.

America was founded on the principles of the Bible! Josh, if that is even your real name, your hate speech will not be tolerated in the new American uprising. This country was founded on the principles of Christianity and Anarchy and the sooner your realize this the sooner we can get back to fixing this country.

    Joe, your post is frightening.

You, your beliefs and need to spread fear is everything that is wrong with this country.

With the masses of America starting to think for themselves by leaving organized religions, this gives me hope.

ACLU is one of the best organizations in this country.

Joe, you are just offended that the ACLU fights for and defends people who don't believe in your faith.

    Don't be angry.

I have no idea why "wittily" is in this headline. This is exactly the response i would expect from the ACLU. The ACLU has defended the rights of the KKK to march for the same reasons it defends my right to march. I have seen that exact same statement several times before made by the ACLU. They were not trying to be cute or funny or witty. They were doing what they always do, standing up for the United States Constitution and the Civil Liberties it was written to protect.

    Whoah whoah whoah Joe....

So you want anarchy AND a theocracy? Does the phrase "cognitive dissonance" ring a bell? Those are diametrically opposed concepts.

This country was founded during The Age of Enlightenment on the principles of freedom and liberty.

Joe didn't say he wanted a theocracy. He thinks the country was founded on Christianity and anarchy, still wrong but not the wrong you think it is.

There is a long history of anarchist religious groups, a lot more if you consider anarcho-syndicalism as a form anarchism. That said, Joe still seems a little confused.

I'd like to think that Joe is joking, his accusation against Josh rings very false.

@xoites: "Wittily" seems perfectly appropriate to me. Being witty isn't remotely equal to being cute (i.e. pleasing but childlike), rather it means to use humor with intelligence and sophistication." Urging the senator to contact the ACLU in order to defend his anti-ACLU vanity plate, at the very least, points on an inherent irony (even though the offer itself was genuine), irony being an essential component of wit.

There is more mis- and disinformation disseminated against the ACLU than there is against Barak Obama. The ink wasn't yet dry on our Bill of Rights before elements both inside and outside our government began trying to steal those rights away from us. Since its inception, the ACLU has been one of the all too few groups of citizens banded together within this country to carry on the vigil of those who would steal our rights away from us and they often do so while facing the wrath of those too foolish to even realize that they too are the victims of this theft. That's all.

What is "offensive to good taste or decency" about GOD-S (which I would interpret as Goddess), YEAHBUT, OR YUCK? Whoever refused to issue these license plates has some serious mental problems!

Are you kidding me? The ACLU usually only supports that which is non-religious, or secular. Try wearing a T-Shirt to school that says "God Loves You" and watch the EVL ACLU come out in force. Don't lie.......
