News Roundup: Tiahrt compares Dems to communists; Roberts to seek reelection

Todd Tiahrt took shots at Democrats and his opponent Jerry Moran during an address Monday at Pittsburg State University.

Tiahrt portrayed the Democrats in power as “communists” and “socialists” who want to control Americans through the power of the federal government.

According to the Pittsburg Morning Sun , Tiahrt said that Democrats plan to coerce people “into a life of dependency” from “cradle to the grave.”

Tiahrt also criticized Moran for what Tiahrt claimed was a lack of action in Washington. The two legislators are running to replace Sen, Sam Brownback, who is running for governor.

“We need somebody to fight for us,” Tiahrt said. “We need somebody who is going to ride toward the sound of the guns.”

Tiahrt again confirmed the legality of his alleged unethical earmark request process. He also claims his name has been "besmirched" by false reports of misconduct.

In other news, The Hutchinson News confirmed Pat Roberts will seek reelection in 2014.

Roberts, who would be 78 during the 2014 election, already has more than $82,256 on hand, according to the article.

With Brownback leaving the Senate in early 2011, Roberts will become the senior senator from Kansas, and if reelected, would serve as a Kansas senator longer than any predecessor – except Bob Dole.
