Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke named National Urban League President Marc Morial as chairman of the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2010 Census Advisory Committee, which provides advice on the design and implementation of the 2010 Census.
The Census is mandated by the Constitution. The questionnaire for the upcoming 2010 Census will be one of the shortest in history: just 10 questions that will take only about 10 minutes to complete. All responses are to be kept strictly confidential. The Census data are used to apportion the seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Census data are also used to distribute more than $300 billion in federal funds each year.
“Marc has extraordinary experience in working with national organizations and advocating on behalf of diverse communities,” said Commerce Secretary Gary Locke. “His expertise will help to ensure a complete and accurate count during the 2010 Census.”
Twenty organizations are represented on the 2010 Census Advisory Committee, including data users and experts in the statutory and constitutional uses of decennial census data. The committee membership also includes ex-officio members representing the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.
“The 2010 Census Advisory Committee provides important advice and guidance to the U.S. Census Bureau and we look forward to working with Marc Morial,” said Census Bureau Acting Director Tom Mesenbourg. “His leadership and experience will be vital as we approach the 2010 Census.”
Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League since 2003, leads the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization. Morial served two terms as mayor of New Orleans from 1994 to 2002 and was also president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors from 2001 to 2002. He made Ebony Magazine’s list of the150 most influential people in 2009.
However, as has been widely accepted, New Orleans was and remains one of the most politically corrupt cities in the nation. And Morial was not immune to it during his time as that city's mayor.
In one case, a thirty-seven-page indictment alleged that Morial cronies skimmed money from an $81 million city contract; an ex-cop was charged with pocketing $800,000; and two city officials were accused of receiving $100,000 each. Meanwhile, Morial’s uncle was accused of skimming more than $500,000 from the city transit authority, and Morial’s aunt was convicted on federal charges of paying kickbacks to a school official.
Also, his cheerleaders in the Democrat Party often hailed him as a reformer of the New Orleans Police Department. However, in 2003, New Orleans’s murder rate was nearly eight times the national average. In 2002 and 2003, New Orleans had the highest per capita city homicide rate in the United States, with 59 people killed per year per 100,000 citizens.
Following the announcement of his chairmanship, the news media failed to mention voter fraud and corruption in connection with Morial. Interestingly, campaign contributors wound up with large construction contracts. Then there is the allegation that the police force hired local residents with criminal records that were expunged so they could legally go out onto the streets with guns.
According to Nicole Gelinas, writing in City Journal, "New Orleans’s long history of street carnage is not a topic for polite discussion in Katrina’s aftermath. Politicians and pundits have a million solutions for the city, from building more affordable housing to ensuring better schools to creating an incubator for the nation’s “creative class” to offering tax credits for resettlement. But none addresses the city’s most obvious, and intractable, problem, the one that has kept New Orleans from thriving for years."
That "problem" is political corruption which blossomed during Morial's watch. And now the Census Bureau has Marc Morial running a census with the help of an alleged corrupt organization, ACORN? 2010 will be an interesting year for any reporter brave enough -- and moral enough -- to investigate the activities of the US Census Bureau.

The Nevada case against ACORN corruption stated that removing the voter registrations ACORN submitted, the average new registrations, saw about 2-3 % were found to be defective.
ACORN's new voter registrations found close to 50% to be fraudulent, NOT JUST defective. FRAUDULENT!
Now they are going to count people for representation and taxpayers dollars!
More fraud from the Fraud in Chief who has close relationships with ACORN founders and leaders. The Chicago style politics 53% of the naive voted for.
