Back in September, regular old TV stations started airing earlier episodes of The Hills, starting out at either 9pm on WDCW in Washington, DC, or 1pm on WPIX in New York. But as of last week, these same two stations moved The Hills either to 12 midnight on WDCW, or 3am on WPIX. Why have these Tribune-owned stations, affiliated with The CW moved The Hills to later time slots? The most obvious reason is ratings. Ratings were more than likely not strong enough to compete in either Prime Time slots, or even weekend daytime slots. Most fans of The Hills at those time mentioned are more than likely not home on a weekend afternoon, or even watch The Hills on non-other than cable. And even worse, one doesn't have to wait for a TV station, let alone MTV to watch The Hills. Fans can go to MTV.com at anytime to watch not only recent episodes, but older episodes of Lauren Conrad, and the craziness she'd gone through for so long. Getting repositioned in the wee hours can mean either two things, the most grave one could be that it's a sign that it's not going to survive for very long in syndication. And then, there's a more positive outlook, The Hills reruns could somehow flourish overnight, attracting those looking for something to watch right then and there. Even Hills audiences who are either middle school, high school, or college aged who are up at those hours anyway on a Saturday Night. Whatever the outcome, let's at least hope The Hills in syndication will be around long enough to last into another season or two.
