Don't miss Metallica's sole TV performance of 2008 tonight at MTV Latino America awards

Metallica

Ok, here’s the deal. Maybe Latin music is not your thing. But if you tune in tonight and watch "Los Premios MTV Latino America 2008," you’ll have the chance to see Metallica’s sole television performance of 2008.

Yep, the legendary heavy metal group will take the stage tonight at the annual show to perform “The Day That Never Comes,” the first single from its newest album “Death Magnetic.”

The awards, to be held at the Auditorio Telmex in Guadalajara, Mexico, will air live starting at 9 p.m. (ET), only on MTV Tr3s.

“Metallica is the biggest hard rock band in the world — period," said José Tillan, senior vice president of content and music for MTV/VH1 Latin America. "We are honored to have them play at Premios this year. If you have never seen Metallica play, you are in for a heart-stopping experience. My ears are still ringing from the last time I saw them live a couple of years ago!"

But what if you’re not a headbanger either, right? Well, if catching Metallica’s act isn’t enough to get you to tune in, consider the list of other live performances slated for tonight by some of today’s hottest Latin names – Calle 13, Café Tacvba, Bostich + Fusible of Nortec Collective, Kudai, Katy Perry, Ximena Sariñana, Tokio Hotel, Belanova and Julieta Venegas.

But wait, there’s more. Did I mention the Colombian singer-songwriter Juanes, already a 12-time Latin Grammy winner, will give his performance debut of “Odio por amor,” the latest cut from his new album “La vida… Es un ratico.” Juanes is this year’s leading nominee, with seven nods recognizing his effort.

Still not convinced? But there’s more. Latin rockers are also in for a treat as the popular Argentinean band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs will also give a special live performance via satellite from Argentina. Cool, hu? Presenters include Gene Simmons, Flavor Flav, Tila Tequila and 30 Seconds to Mars, as well as Molotov, Alejandra Guzmán, Miranda and Kim Kardashian.

Oh, and for the Jonas Brothers’ cult following, the Jonases “When You Look Me in The Eyes” is up for best song of the year, competing against Venegas’ “El presente,” Juanes’ “Me enamora” and Tokio Hotel’s “Monsoon.” The Jonases are also up for an award in the best new international artist category.

All in all, I think tonight’s big winners will be Juanes, Café Tacvba, Belanova and Babasónicos. In the past year, they have really stirred up the Latin music world with their new efforts, hit singles and rollicking videos.

Above, Juanes performs "La vida es un ratico."

Metallica performed 2 new songs live on Jools Holland this year, so this is hardly their sole TV performance of 2008.

It was so frustrating being such a huge Metallica fan (and club member too!) and not being able to attend the MTV awards being held in MY hometown!!! What were supposedly free tickets to attend the show were given away by the state government officials, who in turn acted as scalpers and sold tickets for over $100 USD!!! Those people banging fists when Metallica played are no real fans. The local metal community was shut down from those awards. It seems that I need to live in a place like Denmark or Finland to actually see Metallica, since they've almost completly forgotten about their fans south of the border (save for this brief appearance). Not even the Metallica fan club had anything special for fan club members to offer. Very bad indeed. As for the rest of the artists? They all suck!

    I love the blog!

Another question. Since the reggaeton "crash"

(not sure if this is accurate, but appears to be a "recession" in reggaeton, which you addressed earlier in part by reporting on Daddy Yankee’s innovations and incorporation of new musical styles in his recent album - a response by Daddy Yankee of sorts to keep the music relevant)

back to the question though, since the reggaeton crash, have their been any successful attempts by radios to promote a mix of music in English and Spanish, such as a station playing songs from groups such as U2 as well as Julieta Venegas or MANA on the same station?

Correct me if I am mistaken, but I think that KCRW has a show that does this – KCRW morning sounds eclectic out in California. But it seems to me that this is how innovation in latin pop/rock music has worked: Radio stations played music in English, in countries such as Mexico and Argentina; future performers listened to that music growing up; and when they decided to embark on their careers they took those influences and infused it with a new language (Spanish), as well other sounds they knew from their musical exposure and experiences.

Thus, music evolved. Playing Metallica at the show seems to be in that line: play music from another country and see what journey that music takes.

Impressive as always from Julieta Venegas - she performed with Nortec Collective AND a mariachi band?

Julieta looks a little bit worn down.

Not impressed by Juanes' songwriting abilities. I dont know what it is but since his first two albums as Juanes his lyrics seem to have lost their edge. He is a great musician (technically) and I know it is a bad idea to criticize Juanes, but for some reason his lyrics just dont work for me. Anyhows.

Paramore seems like a throwback to the 1980s music like "The Warrior", but it seems like her band's inclusions just serves to show how much better Julieta Venegas, Juanes and Belanova are. I'm probably mistaken - her performance probably gives another artist there a good idea or two of something to try out - not to "be like Paramore" but rather to incorporate something they like from her performance into a future song.

Man, some of these performances are great! I looked at 2006 performance with Daddy Yankee's duet with Julieta Venegas and Kinky, as well as Calle 13 and Nelly Furtado. part of me know the reason is to promote ALL of their music collectively, at the same time - but the blend of sounds among them was something else. It made Kinky better, it made Daddy Yankee look awesome, and Julieta Venegas as always benefitted from their playing HER song. She and Shakira really are THE divas of pop en espanol.

Man, I am not on the Ximena Sarinana bandwagon yet.

I hear you. It took me a while to swallow her style at first, but after several listening sessions it kind of grew on me.
