See, Saturday Night Live? Cute starlets aren't the secret to a good show.
Sometimes what you really need is a mid-level former child TV star turned indie movie actor, like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who brought a load of much-needed energy to an uneven 35th season of SNL.
Some highlights:
The cold opening with President Obama in China was funny but perhaps there was one too many "having sex with" punchlines:
JG-L's Donald O'Connor-inspired musical number -- Make 'Em Laugh from my all-time favorite movie Singin' in the Rain (and no, I'm not a grandmother):
"The Mellow Show," where Andy Samberg reprises his hacky-sacking Jack Johnson, JG-L plays a spot-on Jason Mraz and Dave Matthews gets to play Ozzy Osbourne (!) while Bill Hader plays Mattthews:
Weekend Update, which had some big laughs including former Vice President Al Gore playing his Green Week "Punxsutawney Phil" (his words):
And the last skit, which poked fun at the quintessential chick flick Say Anything. A neighbor stops by while John Cusack (JG-L) holds his boombox aloft:
