This year's most buzzed about Super Bowl ad featured a David Letterman/Jay Leno hostile reunion with Oprah seated between the two as a buffer. The commercial was supposed to feature Conan O'Brien, as well. When Dave's producer, Rob Burnett, phoned up Conan's producer, Jeff Ross, he had to decline O'Brien's invite because due to all the recent hubbub and scandal, "They weren't in a position to consider it at all."
Jay explained why he would be inclined to show up for an advertisement of his rival's program, "The Late Show with David Letterman." He noted, "No matter what animosity there is among comedians, a good joke is a good joke...I want to thank Dave. I was glad to promote his show." The two hosts haven't seen each other in 18 years. Leno joked about adding Dave as a friend on Facebook. Leno arrived to the shoot disguised in a sweatshirt, dark sunglasses, and a fake mustache. His bosses at NBC were worried about hearing that Letterman was recording a top secret show. They were led to somehow believe that the man in disguise was President Obama!
Letterman only briefly mentioned the ad on his Monday night show. He wanted to thank the actors who portrayed Jay Leno and Oprah Winfrey. Paul Shaffer yelled out that the resemblances were uncanny.
No word yet on whether Jay Leno will appear on a commercial during the Academy Awards with Jimmy Kimmel to promote his newest rival's show on ABC.
