Weapons are an integral part of some American LARPs (live action role playing games). LARPers use safe weapons to solve conflict in conjunction with in-game character mechanics such as hit points and damage. LARP weapons are also part of a character's costume and may reveal or conceal information about a character's class, profession or place of origin.
LARPs vary greatly in terms of allowed weapons, but responsible games conduct weapon safety checks at each and every game. Safe games also have stringent weapon requirements for each type of weapon to promote safe combat and create standardization.
Here are the different types of weaponry used at LARPs:
Boffer weapons are often homemade. You create them using PVC pipe, duct tape and open cell foam. For more information on making boffer weapons, check out the Seventh Kingdom IGE Boffer How-To. To learn about acquiring the appropriate foam for boffers, check out the Philadelphia LARP Examiner's article on this topic. Most LARPs allow some variation of the boffer weapon. These are also the most inexpensive and easily-repaired weapons you can acquire. Because you can easily reuse the parts for other LARP weapons or structures, they're also better for the environment.
Latex weapons are typically very durable. They have a particularly intense sting in cold temperatures and winter months, so not all LARPs allow them. The LARPs that do allow them usually have restrictions such as 'no thrusting with a latex weapon.' Latex weapons are incredibly realistic looking. If you're used to using a real weapon, you might prefer a latex weapon because it has a bit of weight to it. Latex weapons require responsibility and should be inspected for damage and wear just like any other weapons.
Foam weapons are very realistic looking like latex. They tend to weigh a bit less. If you want your character to walk around with a bunch of weapons, foam may be a good choice since it won't weigh you down. High-quality foam weapons can get expensive and LARPs vary on allowing them. You can purchase foam weapons over at Calimacil - this Canada-based company also offers monthly drawings to win free Calimacil weapons.
Each LARP differs on rules and regulations concerning weapons. If you're not sure whether your weapon will make the cut, contact the game's staff ahead of time regarding the weapon. You may be able to arrange an advanced inspection. Even within brand names, there are certain designations. A Calimacil weapon made years ago is an excellent, sturdy weapon--but the quality of Calimacil weapons has improved in recent years. For this reason, some LARPs may accept new Calimacil weapons while rejecting older ones.
When selecting a weapon, you should also consider skill. If you're used to fighting 'sword and board,' you may wish to use a one-handed weapon to keep your other hand free for shield use.
