The East English Village (EEV) homeowners association along with sponsor, Next Detroit Neighborhood Initiative, will host its first house tour Sunday, October 11, 2009 from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m.

The roads, Cadieux, Outer Drive, Mack and Harper outline this walk-able Detroit neighborhood. The tour will highlight the unique architectural details and well-maintained landscapes along these tree-lined streets. Home styles range from small bungalows to large, luxurious older homes. It’s a charmingly smaller version of the adjacent Grosse Pointe suburbs.

Registration

There is no cost to attend what is being called, “The Other Village Home Tour.” No doubt an allusion to nearby Grosse Pointe, whose downtown is known as “The Village.” Registration is required, either online here, or in person on the day of the tour. The tour will begin at 4240 Kensington Road, where participants can check in, complete their registration, sign a waiver, and pick up their tour booklet. The homes are located comfortably close to each other for walking, however, a shuttle bus will also be available.

Meet and greet

Certain homes have been chosen to serve as check-in and “garden stops.” Tour participants can meet current neighbors, enjoy light refreshments and view beautifully landscaped gardens along the way.

Showcase

The area has its share of “real estate owned” homes due to economic factors, yet several of these architecturally significant homes will be among the highlighted homes. One house will be treated as a "showroom" with new furnishings provided by home décor vendors McLaughlin Furniture, Elegance by Design, and Hagopian World of Rugs. At the tour check-in location, the famous “Camelot Rug” from the Kennedy White House will be on display courtesy of Nourison Industries and Elegance by Design.

Historic Alger Theater

During the tour, the Historic Alger Theater on East Warren Avenue at East Outer Drive will open its doors for a rare look inside. This property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

Cadieux Café afterglow reception

An afterglow at the Cadiuex Café will follow the 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. tour. This is the only place in the U.S. where you’ll find the unique sport of Belgian Featherbowling being played.
