A North Shore village with many North Shore charms, Stony Brook is home to many quaint and historical attractions. Along with the Grist Mill, the Hercules, the village, and of course, the Carriage Museum, Stony Brook also houses a mechanical eagle which was installed in the pediment of the village post office in 1941 as philanthropist Ward Melville's vision for the area.
Carved out of wood, the eagle flaps its wings every hour on the hour from 8 am to 8 pm, based on its synchronization with the clock on the cupola of the post office that serves as a cornerstone of the Village Center.
The post office itself was established back when Stony Brook was Stoney Brook, March 24, 1807 and boasts the nostalgic Federal style architecture that is still popular today.
