The discostick. The video glasses. The bloody VMA performance. The exploding brassiere. If you have ever wondered where these creations come from the answer is, The Haus of GaGa. A modern-day, futuristic Warhol Factory. The Haus of GaGa is comprised of young artists and friends whom Lady GaGa has supported over the years and always kept them close to her creations. “In this industry, you get a lot of stylists and producers thrown at you, but this is my own creative team, modelled on Warhol’s Factory. Everyone is under 26 and we do everything together.”
Both Lady GaGa and Andy Warhol have used the mainstream media and culture as a springboard for their art. “How do I make pop, commercial art be taken as seriously as fine art? That’s what Warhol did,” she continues, “How do I make music and performances that are thought-provoking, fresh and future? We [The Haus] decide what’s good and, if the ideas are powerful enough, we can convince the world that it’s great.”
It will come as no surprise that The Haus was also behind Lady GaGa’s short films, which were interlaced throughout her Fame Ball Tour. Their next creation is Lady GaGa’s upcoming tour The Monster Ball. Although details have yet to be released, GaGa has stated, “‘The Monster Ball’ is a multimedia artistic experience in the style of the first-ever ‘pop electro opera.’”
Lady GaGa has been highly influenced by Andy Warhol. Her use of repetition through attire you can always count on, platinum blond hair and sunglasses, was a huge aspect of Warhol’s creations. She keeps giving the audience these messages, whether they want it or not. GaGa says, "If you say something long enough, people will listen. Warhol kept telling people, 'This is art, this is art, this is art' and eventually they said, 'Andy Warhol is brilliant, he is the future of art'. You just have to keep hammering the image."
