Adrenaline Lacrosse, a California based lacrosse company, announced a partnership on March 3rd that will lend a lot of oomph around the growing sport of wheelchair lacrosse. Adrenaline, with the help of sponsors, will be hosting the first known Wheelchair Lacrosse Camp later in March. The camp, which will take place the weekend of March 21-22 in San Jose, California, will introduced sports-minded wheelchair athletes to the sport.
Wheelchair lacrosse was invented by wheelchair athletes Ryan Baker and BIll Lundstrom during the winter of 2009. "I always figured that if I could push with a tennis racquet in my hand that I could surely push with a lacrosse stick, right?" states Baker on the duo's Wheelchair Lacrosse website. The two have created an entire set of rules and regulations for the new sport through pickup games. Using traditional sticks and padding, seven athletes per team play against each other on a roller hockey rink. Nets are modeled after indoor roller hockey nets - a bit different than the traditional lacrosse goal.
The hope of Wheelchair Lacrosse Camp is to spread the sport farther among the wheelchair athlete population. "The game is so progressive in the adaptive sport community and we look forward to seeing it grow on a national level," stated Baker in Adrenaline's press release announcing the camp. Additional programs will be scheduled in the future based on demand.
