Photo by Tan Nguyen, enhanced by the SCWXA
A powerful low came down from Alaska and brought a round of moderate to heavy rainfall across the Southland, funnel clouds, hail, waterspouts, and lightning.
The O.C. Register reports a funnel cloud was seen off the coast. Gary Robbins, science editor, shows a photograph of a funnel cloud over the ocean, taken by Tan Nguyen. Robbins states that it was a funnel cloud and the National Weather Service said so.
"I spoke to Miguel Miller at NWS San Diego." said Robbins. He says funnel clouds never reach the surface. He thinks all of the images are funnel clouds."
Robbins continued to put up a fight with people saying they notice the funnel reaching the water and touching it. Robbins seems to take the word of National Weather Service even if it is wrong. We are still waiting for the article that says the sun actually rises in the west because NWS said so.
Now not sure what Miller puts in his morning cup of coffee but the SCWXA sees the photo as not a funnel cloud, but a waterspout. The photo displayed shows water being disturbed on the bottom of the funnel, thus making it touching the surface and reaching waterspout status. The photo was also taken into an enhancing process to clearly see a funnel coming up from the base.

you can see the funnel very well and the spray from the water not sure what NWS was thinking thats a water spout not just a funnel cloud
In addition to the OC action, there was a waterspout that came ashore that morning in Goleta, near Santa Barbara. There's video of this event on one of the popular video sites. Lots of great action along the coast on Saturday for sure!
Bart, thanks for the comment. Never saw the video but I'll look it up. The atmosphere was prime for cells capable of funnel clouds or even small tornadoes (which most in this field say we do not have).
Thanks again, have a good night -
Kevin
