Los Angeles Times sports writer Mike Penner had announced two years ago he was a transsexual and was changing his name to Christine Daniels was pronounced dead at age 52.
He is believed to have committed suicide.
Los Angeles County Coroner spokesperson Lt. Brian Elias said coroner's officials hadn't yet performed an autopsy or issued an official cause of death.
Penner had returned to using the name Mike Penner last year. He remained a Times columnist at the time of his death.
Penner's career spanned 25 years with the Times, covering Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the Olympics, World Cup soccer, and other sports.
On April 26, 2007, he wrote a column with the title "Old Mike, New Christine," where he revealed that when he returned from his vacation it would be as a woman named Christine Daniels.
