Piece of Cake Café has been San Gabriel’s best kept secret, but not for much longer. This stylish ultramodern dessert and coffee shop is quite inviting. It houses a living room area complete with soft red and white couches, coffee tables, magazines, and playing cards for you to enjoy while having your dessert of choice. In another section you can sit in a dining room styled setting, perfect for all your friends to gather. Piece of Cake Café offers three hours of free Wi-Fi Internet with a coffee purchase; so many people enjoy their simple and sleek Internet area for work or study. If you’re companionless sit at the coffee bar or if privacy is what you and your date seek then be sure to make your way to the back of this chic Café for a quiet dining experience detailed in contemporary décor finished with a beaded curtain for added seclusion.
Piece of Cake Café primarily consists of custom Japanese-Taiwanese inspired coffees and desserts but do offer many Italian selections as well. I was immediately drawn to the popular Brown Sugar Assorted Shaved Ice, as the picture on the wall looked to be curiously appealing. Atop the heaping dish of shaved ice are chunks of sweet potato (a Japanese delicacy), chewy translucent tapioca pearls made of gelatin also known as Boba (originating in Taiwan), sweet red beans (Azuki beans boiled in sugar), cubes of grass jelly (found in Taiwan) which had a slightly bitter taste with a light lavender flavor, topped with brown sugar syrup. Each ingredient in itself stood alone but when combined they each complimented one another, in form and flavor.
Recently added to the menu is an Italian dessert called Panna cotta (meaning “cooked cream”). It is made by simmering cream, milk, and sugar then adding gelatin to form a type of milk flan. It is served chilled resting on bed of sweet strawberry sauce, garnished with thinly sliced strawberries and tapioca pearls. It was devouringly delicious. It also comes in mango, caramel, coffee and red bean.
Coffee… You have the option of having your coffee brewed in a vacuum coffee maker, a device used for over a century in many parts of the world. It produces coffee which is clean, crisp, rich and smooth. The Japanese Vienna coffee was and still is the best coffee I have ever had.
Now that the secret has been revealed, partake at Piece of Cake Café.
