New Mexico female soccer player suspended indefinitely (video)

The University of New Mexico properly banned Elizabeth Lambert, 20 from her team, after she engaged in conduct that could be considered criminal or civil assault and battery in a court of law.

Playing in a soccer match against rival Brigham Young University Lambert can be seen in the video (below) kicking, punching and even yanking an opponent to the ground by her ponytail.

Lambert released the following apology: "I am deeply and wholeheartedly regretful for my actions. My actions were uncalled for. I let my emotions get the best of me in a heated situation. I take full responsibility for my actions and accept any punishment felt necessary from the coaching staff and UNM administration."

The University has suspended Lambert indefinitely from all athletic facilities and programs.

Yeah, pretty stupid moves. I don't think a criminal penalty is warranted, unless there were injuries sustained beyond that day. But she needs anger management and counseling. Currently she is not fit for collegiate sports. Get some help and maybe in some other sports later on. Hope this was not a soccer scholarship!

Poor sportsmanship at its worst! It cannot be overlooked, following due process, she needs to answer for her actions, which go beyond aggressive play!

Something mental is wrong with this woman. Please get her out of sports. She could have broken the girl with the pony tail's neck. Thank God it was ALL caught on take. She sets a poor example for the younger athletes' playing the game and I assure you a few of them will see her and emulate her.

Heated situation? Its a #$%&ing soccer game against a bunch of mormons for #$%&s sake. People who take any sport too seriously, be they the jock sniffing fans or overzealous players, need to chill out. This fixation with watching humans play fetch with other humans just isn't worth it.

She sacrificed her ability to play her beloved sport and embarrassed herself in front of the entire nation. "pwned" indeed.

Rugby ans football are designed to be a much more full contact sport than soccer. comparison is irrevelant. Lamberts actions were uncalled for and too vicious for the game.

if you look at the action prior to the pony tail, the byu player was grabbing Lambert's shorts. She reacted to the situation, but did definitely over react. Not sure if banning is the proper course.
