How to spot a good group fitness instructor

taken from 24 Hour Fitness Web Site

Perhaps you’ve been there. You walk into a group fitness class for the first time and you spot the instructor. You take an initial evaluation of him or her to see if your first impression gives you the sense that they know about fitness. After all, you are going to trust them for the next 60 minutes while they guide you through a workout. Do they appear professional? In your opinion, are they in good physical condition? Do they appear confident? Here's a few good pointers when it comes to recognizing a good group fitness instructor.

Instructors should first and foremost introduce themselves by name and state the class format. Next, they should ask if there is anyone new to the class and welcome them. Perhaps even give a brief overview of what the format consists of. Unless the class is listed as an intermediate or advanced class, instructors should teach the class at a beginning level, showing modifications for those that want to either increase the challenge or decrease the intensity. An excellent instructor will never make a participant feel that what they are doing is not good enough. Hey, you’re there exercising, that’s half the battle! An intuitive instructor will know how to make you feel proud for the hard work you’re performing as well as encourage you in a positive way to do even more.

Group fitness classes should be a positive experience. For the instructor, the key is to challenge you enough so that the workout is demanding yet make you want to come back for more. Watch out for instructors who are in it for themselves. Class is not about the instructor’s workout, it’s about YOURS! Be weary of instructors who are consistently late to class and appear unorganized or frazzled. That mentality can very easily sneak into the tone of the class.
