Long Beach is considering a proposal by a Las Vegas company to restore the Queen Mary and let it sail again.
The Cairngorm Entertainment Group estimates the Queen’s Project could cost as much as $1.5 billion and require four years of dry-dock restorations.
The Queen Mary has been docked for 40 years in Long Beach Harbor, where it has served as a floating museum and hotel.
The city owns the ship, which had its maiden voyage in 1936 and served military duty in World War II.
Cairngorm CEO Robert Sides III estimates the Queen Mary's value at "tens of millions of dollars," which is generating excitement among some leaders of the cash-strapped city.
However, the ship and the undeveloped beachfront around it is operated under a 66-year lease by Garrison Investment Group of New York.
Long Beach City Councilman Patrick O’Donnell told the Los Angeles Daily News, “I’m not dismissing any potential revival of the ship.”
