Who doesn't like cheap beer and cheap food? That's the logic behind one of downtown Lansing's latest bars, the Tin Can (414 Michigan Ave, next to Harem). You can find plenty of both at this place--but the only thing you won't find, is draft beer or bottles.
That's right--cans only.
Why? It is cheaper to run a can only bar, which translates to cheaper drinks for customers. It also means more variety.
Sure, you'll find the cheap staples like Budweiser and their ilk, but you can also get try other brands, ranging from Schlitz to Chupacabra to the UP's own Keweenaw Brewing Company.
And the list goes on and on. Check the slide show for a photo of the menu. The cheapest of the cheap go for $1.75 each, with the next tier going for $3.00 and the last coming in at $4.
The Tin Can also features chili dogs, which are OK, but after three cans of Schlitz, who cares? You don't go to a place like this expecting a five-star menu--and if you do, that's just silly.
Speaking of chili dogs, you can get what is called the "Happy Meal," for $6--it includes a shot of Jack Daniels, a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon and a chili dog.
As a bar, the Tin Can is spacious, with a long bar and a few tall tables. It makes for a great casual hang out bar in the late afternoon/early evening, but as the night gets later, it draws in more of a crowd.
If you want a spot for a quiet, cheap drink after work, make sure to swing by, as the place isn't too crowded.
And do yourself a favor: work your way through the beer list (not in one sitting, c'mon) and try some of the micro-brews and imports. Broaden your beer horizons.
