Local knitting shop word is that the Newport rage among all the young knitters is the cowl. The one beautifully made and pictured is from Knit-Purl where you can purchase the pattern. Or you can find several patterns available for free on Ravelry.
Interestingly, the cowl originates from use by religious orders, worn by clerics and monks to guard against the drafty confines of unheated churches and cold quarters. Makes all the sense in the world for winter storms in the Rhode Island area to bring back fashion from Medieval times.
Shown in the slideshow are cowls you'll want to see: Silk Garden Lite Cowl designed and knitted by Kourtney Robinson and DollyBirdWorkshop, available on Ravelry for free and the Thursday Cowl designed by Christabel Seneque and Herbivore Knits, knitted by Sarah of Richland, Washington knittedfox, free pattern Ravelry.
Classic Elite Yarns, of nearby Lowell, Massachusetts, has a gorgeous lace cowl free pattern for Fresco Basket Whip Cowl done with their Freso yarns, 60% wool, 30% alpaca and 10% angora, so soft and warm. The pattern is designed by Laura Patterson. Look for it in the slideshow below.
A new book lace knitters will want to have is The Haapsalu Shawl, A Knitted Lace Tradition of Estonia by Siiri Reimann & Aime Edasi. " Exquisitely photographed, this guide to Estonian lace is worthy of both the coffee table and an expert knitter's shelf. Filled with artful photography, detailed drawings and charts, The Haapsalu Shawl is a priceless reference on Estonian lace."
"More than a simple pattern or project book, this rare guide is a time capsule that takes the reader on a journey through the history, construction and design process of creating a traditional Haapsalu Sall ("shawl"). With over 130 traditional Estonian lace patterns in the stitch library and detailed documentation of famous historic Haapsalu Shawls, this reference is one that no lace devotee should live without." The book may also be ordered from the publisher Apollo. And at last look Knit-Purl has six English translated copies at $60.00. It is available on Amazon in short supply at $65, please confirm translation before purchase.
