Mother’s Day being just the other day reminded me of gifts my children have given me. The one that pops to mind, handmade potholders. The children wove loops of various colors together on a square loom. After binding it off, the gift just needed to be wrapped.

This is an excellent introduction to weaving. School will be letting out soon. It is a great rainy day solution. You can teach someone as young as 5 to weave the loops. Tweens can be busy making coin purses out of the squares for themselves and their friends.

The classic children’s loom develops fine motor skills, increasing finger dexterity and concentration. A fun sense of color work can be accomplished through over a dozen different colored loops. Loops used to be made from recycled socks. The loops come in 100% cotton or 100% wool. Wool loops are fire resistant.

If you are looking for weaving classes or a metal potholder loom, In Sheep’s Clothing, located at 98 Main St. Torrington, CT 06790 860-482-3979, is the place.  “Remember the hours of fun you used to have with the potholder looms? These very sturdy metal looms and  come with enough extra strong cotton loopers to make two potholders, or one very cute purse $ 9.95. Extra loopers are available. $ 5.95” Call to arrange a weaving lesson, on your loom or one she has in her studio.

What was best about the potholder gifts; they were useful and they lasted a long time and were made with love.
Happy belated Mother’s Day.
