Ultimate R&B Valentine Concert: Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill & Ralph Tresvant

WDAS presents BOBBY BROWN, JOHNNY GILL & RALPH TRESVANT: The Summit Tour in an exclusive Valentine’s Day concert at the Keswick Theatre on Saturday, February 14 at 8 PM.

The former members of teen sensation group New Edition unite for the season's most exciting R&B show full of chart-topping R&B and pop hits from New Edition as well as the successful solo careers of BROWN, GILL & TRESVANT.

Double-platinum New Edition was formed in 1978 by founding members Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins & BOBBY BROWN. Their first single, “Candy Girl”, reached the top of the R&B charts in 1983 without any major-label support. In 1984, they were signed to MCA & less than a year later, achieved full-fledged teen idol status with smash hits “Cool It Now” & “Mr. Telephone Man”. BROWN left to pursue a solo career in 1986 & was replaced by JOHNNY GILL. With their new leader, New Edition continued to top the charts with their 1989 album release, Heart Break, which included the #1 R&B hit, “Can You Stand the Rain”. The group exploded back onto the scene in 1996 with the comeback album, Home Again, which entered the charts at #1 that fall & generated chart-toppers “Hit Me Off” & “I’m Still in Love”. After a blockbuster tour, New Edition returned to their various prior projects.

Founding New Edition member BOBBY BROWN is credited with popularizing new jack swing, a blend of classic soul, urban synth-funk, and hip-hop rhythms that often featured rap breaks in between the conventionally melodic verses and choruses. After leaving New Edition in 1986 for a solo career, BROWN achieved superstardom with the release of Don’t Be Cruel, which sold seven million copies, and generated four Top Ten hits. He achieved more commercial success with his 1992 release, Bobby, & became known as one of the brightest R&B stars of all time.

JOHNNY GILL had already landed two Top 30 R&B hits before joining New Edition in 1988 as Brown’s replacement. 1989 was a big year for GILL as his New Edition debut was well-received by fans & his guest spots on tracks by Stacy Lattisaw, “Where Do We Go from Here”, & George Howard, “One Love”, both became R&B hits with Lattisaw’s single reaching #1 on the R&B charts. His subsequent solo release, Johnny Gill, sold a million copies, topped the R&B chart & made the Top Ten on the pop charts.

RALPH TRESVANT was the last member of New Edition to release a solo project.  It didn’t take long for him to follow in his former band mates footsteps, as his solo debut, Ralph Tresvant, went platinum, parking at #1 on the R&B charts.  His first #1 single, “Sensitivity” sold over a million copies. TRESVANT also found success with the hit single “Money Can’t Buy You Love” from the Damon & Marlon Wayans movie Mo’ Money and appeared in the movie House Party 2.
