Last Saturday, Georgia Kayak Fishing held the third stop on its four stop statewide tournament trail. The trail is a catch-photo-release kayak fishing tournament with all proceeds benefiting the Georgia Wildlife Federation, The Georgia FFA-FCCLA Center and the Georgia Kayak Fishing Foundation.
Anglers were allowed to fish anywhere on the Georgia coast they wished to catch the biggest combination of a red drum, sea trout and flounder from their kayak. Catching all three qualifies as a “slam”. Anglers faced tough conditions including high winds and a new moon flood tide. Live bait and artificial lures both produced the target species as well as some other undesired catches including sharks, stingrays and even a four foot long gar!
Fifty-one anglers registered for the event, and only 14 anglers weighed-in fish. The only slams were caught by the top five anglers and the top six anglers were all experienced kayak fisherman from the Savannah area.
The results for the open division were as follows:
1st - Chris Chappell
• Redfish - 21"
• Trout - 16.25"
• Flounder - 22.5"
Total - 59.75”
2nd - Dylan Munn
• Redfish - 25.5"
• Trout - 15.5"
• Flounder - 16"
Total – 57”
3rd - Jerry Case
• Redfish - 19.5"
• Trout - 15.5"
• Flounder - 17.25"
Total - 52.25"
The Youth angler division was clinched by 16 year old Dylan Munn who also qualified for 2nd place in the open division.
Points leader Tony Yang also furthered his lead over the pack with a 7th place finish. He currently sits 109 points over the 2nd place angler which is a substantial lead but the 2nd through 5th place anglers still have a shot to overtake him and are already gearing up for the next tournament!
