Faced with ongoing cash shortages, Kansas will again delay payments to school districts. Postponing of $200 million in payments to 295 school districts will allow the state to meet its own payroll and other expenses. However, it will likely force about 100 school districts to violate the law in order to pay their own bills.
Payment to school districts was due January 1st, but won’t be fully paid until the end of January. State officials hope to make half of the payments by January 8th. Kansas also delayed payments to school districts in November and December.
Funding cuts and delays in payments to school districts have prompted Schools for Fair Funding to pursue re-opening of an earlier lawsuit against the state. Kansas’ constitution requires the legislature to provide adequate funding for public schools.
