Josh Groban to appear on Glee

Josh Groban will make a cameo appearance on Fox’s new television show, Glee, this fall. According to Groban, he will play himself on the show but as an “absolute jerk.” This is far from his real persona, as he is well known to be a down to earth and personable guy.

Glee is a one-hour comedy about a Midwestern high school glee club with its misfit members and the teacher who tries to improve its image. Created by Rick Murphy (Nip Tuck, Popular), the pilot episode aired earlier this month. The show seems to be trying the ride the wave of the hit movie series High School Musical. The show is set to feature four musical performances per episode. The premiere episode included some contemporary songs sung in a show tune style, including Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab.” The performances were entertaining although the premise is far from realistic.

Yes and no. If you watch the show, YES, it's about a group of kids who in High School and YES, there are musical numbers. However, the kids aren't randomly bursting into songs that function to tell the story (they aren't singing their inner monologues). YES, that "Don't Stop Believin'" number was certainly orchestrated in a fashion that we could almost believe that "Troy and Gabriella" would sin

(continued) would sing it that way.

However, this show is MUCH darker/sinister/subversive...and that's a good thing. I think its closest movie cousins are the pair of "Heathers" and "Election". This is a fairly unflinching look at what it's like to be an outsider (though a bit more tongue-in-cheek). They are not pulling punches about outing the many gay choir directors who have "girlfriends/wives in Canada" or the fact that there's even a bully pecking order within the group that itself ge

(continued) gets bullied. It's also focusing, seemingly, on how most schools focus more time/energy/budget on their athletic programs to the detriment of all other activities/classes at the school.

I can't wait for the fall to continue watching the rest of the story, and hope that Middle America doesn't reject the darker underbelly of the show...!

Okay, Bryan. Heathers? Ready? You are going to equate Glee to a movie where they were going to blow up a school at the end to get rid of the bullies? That's a bit of a stretch, isn't it.

Maybe Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

And please, don't call it realistic. I am a teacher. The guy has no classes. It's all about the club. If I could focus all my attention on one thing, it would rock too. But, I am just going back to the 320 essays I have to grade.
