Joe the Dinner Host

Is it possible Joe Biden took the VP slot just so he could say “His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch” Bartholemew of Constantinople came over for dinner? It seems strange that, of all the people the U.S. Vice President would find it urgent to invite over now, he chooses the archbishop of Constantinople.

Biden announced: "It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. You have always been brave and never from a safe distance. You have stared down those who seek to erode the authority of the Church tirelessly, professing the Greek Orthodox way for millions of followers." He also praised His Holiness for his environmental awareness and promotion of tolerance between religions.

Biden Visits Michigan

As with all VPs before him, Joe knows a thing or two about raising money. He gathered an estimated $318,000 for US Reps Gary Peters of Bloomfield Township and Mark Schauer of Battle Creek at two receptions at the MGM Grand Detroit Casino. Next, he made his rounds to visit with Governor Jennifer Granholm over chili dogs at the historic Lafayette Coney Island. Big Spender Biden insisted on paying for their lunch and beamed, “I got $100 with me. I’ll even buy the press a hot dog!” Back at his hotel, Biden spoke to 140 Democratic donors for thirty minutes about the nation’s economic progress, telling them: “It’s working. We’ve got a long way to go.” He reminded donors “just how horrible things were back in January. This was an economy built on a bubble. The rules were being made by the cowboys on Wall Street.” He spoke again about the need to have the middle class come out strong from this recession.

Veteran’s Day, Biden-Style

Joe Biden hosted a picnic luncheon for 240 active-duty service members and veterans on Wednesday. Jill Biden and VA Secretary Eric Shinseki attended the event as well. Talk of the Fort Hood shootings were in the air, but leave it to Joe Biden to say something off-the-cuff, odd and strangely funny. After Vietnam, Biden says he came to Washington “thinking most generals were like Slim Pickens, jumping out of planes on bombs and yelling ‘yeehaaw.’” But, he says, he quickly changed his mind after he became a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and got to know military leaders better. “Six out of the ten people I most admire were wearing a uniform when I met them,” he said.
