As you know, Joe Biden wears many hats. This week he played the role of Nerve Calmer.

We hate to admit that former President Bush had any good ideas, but Central Europe feels the Missile Defense Shield was one of them. Obama’s ill-timed announcement to scrap the plans came on September 17th -- 70 years after the WWII Soviet invasion of Poland. Additionally, his plans followed the discovery of Iran’s furtive nuclear missile capabilities, which were troubling but not indicative of long-range development. Poland, Romania and the Czech Republic were clearly upset by the decision, while Russia coolly viewed the move as a diplomatic victory.

The custodial Joe Biden was sent in last week to mop up the mess. There's just something about his big affable grin and smooth-talking grandfatherly ways that eases tensions. Biden admitted that the “new plan” could have been explained better, but added that’s why he was returning – to calm nerves and show the administration’s commitment to implementing short and medium-range missile interceptors in the region.
