Disgusting thing to say to someone being treated for cancer - but a collection agent from Topco Financial Services Inc. said just that to a woman who had fallen behind in her payments due to her illness.
The profanity-ridden harassment is illegal as explained by Assistant Attorney General Shannon Smith, of the Consumer Protection Division - “While they have a right to try to collect on debts that you legitimately owe, they must treat consumers fairly and cannot bully, inundate you with harassing phone calls or lie about what will happen if you don’t pay a bill.” In addition, The Attorney’s General is suing Topco for illegally harassing customers and lying to them about what might happen if they didn't pay Topco.
Topco threats include:
- To revoke, suspend or impair debtors’ driver’s licenses.
- To directly impair debtors credit ratings.
- To “bi*ch slap” a debtor.
More insults by Topco collection agents:
'Aren’t you dead yet?'
'Why don’t you just die from cancer because you are a low-life deadbeat?'
'worthless f*cking loser'
'piece of sh^t'
'dumba$$'
'scum'
'terrible parent'
'plight on society'
'You got yourself into this f&cking situation'
'What kind of mother is she to raise a daughter like you?
No wonder the company has gotten over 120 complaints over the last 4 years! To tell someone they will collect dead or alive is disgusting!
I say let's do this - if anyone has a bill in collection and gets a call from Topco, I think a nice "Listen a$$hole, stop f%cking calling me or I will beat the living daylights out of you and your elderly incapacitated grandmother!" or make up your own expletive-filled rebuttal!

Inexcusably unprofessional.
But there is another side to that street.
I know what is is like to have a customer not pay their debt and pull attitude back on me when I tried to collect. For some, when they know they are in the wrong, they get angry and hostile, and lash out at the person they've cheated. They resent anyone else knowing how flawed their character is.
Because I represented a company, I could not let my personal feelings come into play and had to refer them to a collection agency.
But the thing is, my pay was based not just what I sold, but what of that I collected on. So that meant I did not get paid for deadbeat accounts even though I had spent many hours servicing them.
The other thing is, they had the money. I knew because it was consignment inventory--we allowed them to return the balance for full credit, meaning they'd either sold or stolen the rest.
And I have kids to feed and bills to pay, too.
