Jeanne Schneider Noble- Chesapeake art league director, gallery owner, art curator, and artist

Marshy Creek SunriseOn the way to Ocean City, it can be easy to miss Historic Stevensville, located on Kent Island just past the Bay Bridge. But, art lovers, take note; it’s worth the stop. Chesapeake Art League Director, Jeanne Noble, will warmly welcome you to her gallery, Artist at Work Studio and Gallery, on Love Point Road.

How she got her start: Jeanne grew up in a family that was very supportive of her art. Her family always encouraged her by providing her with lessons to keep her talent growing.  Jeanne’s father was an artist himself, working as a water colorist and sign painter. Jeanne studied art during the summers and weekends, and she eventually got a full scholarship to Syracuse University in New York.
Pros: According to Jeanne, “Being an artist is a wonderful way to create somethingCadbury-honed beautiful that has never been in the world before. It’s bringing something from inside yourself out.” She finds happiness in colors and images, finding true bliss in being able to capture the essence of nature successfully. She enjoys curating work as well and strives to assist beginning artists in becoming professional artists.
Cons: Working as an artist can be a lonely profession, especially for artists who don’t have a studio that is open to the public. Artists can become engrossed in their work, and this can result in a loss of connection to friends and family members. Art is also not a necessity, and in tough economic times, artists can really struggle financially.
Advice: Jeanne’s advice to people who want to become professional artists is to keep at it. “Just try to put a brush to canvas, or however you create. Just try; keep trying. You have to do the art to get better and better.” She also offers the following suggestion stating, “Follow (your) dreams but have a solid education behind them. Dreams don’t always happen when you think they will.”
From the PorchCompensation: Art is subjective. Art sells based on what an individual is willing to part with in order to buy the art. Prices vary by location as well. For new painters, Jeanne suggests pricing their art based on the amount of time it took them to create it. A good starting rate would be between $15 and $20 per hour.

Extra: Jeanne’s gallery is stop number one on the Historic Stevensville Official Art Tour. Also included on the tour are galleries with artists specializing in paintings, murals, framing, stained glass, fine arts, arts & crafts, impressionistic oils & pastels, and handcrafted gifts & painted furniture.
