I have been asked recently about what is appropriate when it comes to including a photo on your Linkedin profile. I was specifically asked about it as it pertains to age discrimination if you are an older worker. The recruiter, afterall, will see what you look like.
Here are some dos and donts.
DO: Place a recent photo of yourself on your profile. I believe it is important for your profile to reflect your personality as well as your experience and background. If you do not have a professional "Headshot" photo then use one that is in good taste, with you smiling. Your photo can be of a casual or professional nature as long as it is in good tastes. It shows that you are taking every step on Linkedin to complete your profile and recruiters are more likely to review a profile with a picture than if one is not present.
I believe that if your profile is complete, compelling and interesting with a focus on your skills and accomplishments, your picture won't be a negative.
DON'T: Do not us a photo of your dog or other pet as your main profile photo. It gives the impression that you are not taking your Linkedin profile seriously. Do not use a cartoon image, an icon or any other graphic, because it gives the impression that you have something to hide.
Linkedin is not Facebook. Regard it as your most precious professional online persona if you do not have a blog or personal homepage.
A picture of your dog is more suited to your Facebook or MySpace Page in my opinion.
If you feel uncomfortable about using a photo do not include it at all or set your privacy settings to show your photo to people you have accepted as a connection in your personal network.
