By Carolyn Tann-Starr
“Behind the Screen” (http://movingimage.us/site/exhibitions/pages/index_behind_the_screen.html) is promoted as The Museum of the Moving Image’s core exhibition and is available for viewing while their expansion phrase is still in progress. The architects have designed a stunning new entrance you can get a rendering peek at here: http://movingimage.us/site/expansion/index.html
Did you know that the Museum's programs meet New York City and New York State learning standards in Social Studies, English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Technology, and The Arts? With approximately 125,000 plus artifacts, it is a great place for NY Working Moms to visit who happen to be off from Tuesdays to Fridays to introduce their young adults to a unique experience. It is also a great date for Moms looking to do something new and unusual with a 4th grader and above in tow. Psst… if you do not date with kids in tow you may want to reconsider not leaving the shorties behind for this one. Take a gander at their collection catalog: http://collection.movingimage.us/ You can start many conversations with that catalog alone.
Located at 35 Avenue at 36 Street in Astoria, Queens County, NY 11106; during construction, the Museum hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
According to their website, “Behind the Screen illuminates the many processes involved in producing, marketing and exhibiting the moving image, with more than a thousand film and television artifacts, computer-based interactive experiences, commissioned installations, audio-visual materials and demonstrations of professional equipment and techniques.” (http://movingimage.us/site/exhibitions/index.html)
If you click the Museum’s links regarding their “Web Projects” you will also discover an amazing amount of information to delight your predilection for acquiring movie knowledge to play engaging games of trivial pursuit with your fave movie buffs. (http://movingimage.us/site/online/index.html)
Do you enjoy Michael Caine? He has been described as a man of one face and a thousand characters. (http://www.movingimagesource.us/articles/citizen-caine-20100528) Feel free to search for information on some of your favorite shows. There is an interesting 5-part essay on citizen soldiers and the television series 24, among other things...
By the way, they have a great employment opportunity if you are an animator. To quote their website: “After-School Animation Instructor: Museum of the Moving Image seeks well-spoken, outgoing instructors to teach twelve-week after-school animation courses for middle-school students. The programs run from February to May and include workshops related to hand-drawn animation, stop-motion animation, and computer programming. After-School Animation Instructors will teach at the Museum's partner school once a week for two hours, and will be responsible for developing weekly lesson plans based upon the Museum's curriculum. The Museum seeks instructors for four programs in Brooklyn and Queens.” For more information about today’s Queens County Job of the Day select this link:
