Job of the day: Brooklyn Museum career opportunities
The first thing you may notice about on-line postings is the fact that the job boards update and archive positions as needed. What was there on Monday may be gone by Friday while other positions just sit and sit and sit… Their Intern Listing is a good example of this. The Brooklyn Museum states “Internships not listed below are currently filled. Please check back for internship openings in other Museum departments.” Therefore, if you are going to apply as a Museum intern be quick about getting the required documents submitted. Are you good at creating lesson plans and have experience directing projects, managing budgets, and supervising staff? The Brooklyn Museum is accepting resumes for a Senior Museum Educator/Teacher Services Coordinator for the Museum’s Education/ School Programs (which happens to be a Union-covered position). According to their website:
“Responsibilities: The Senior Museum Educator will design, conduct, and evaluate professional development programs for NYC teachers, training them to incorporate museum learning and the arts into their teaching. Programs include Teaching American History workshops, the Teacher Leadership Program, Summer Teacher Institute, and general staff development workshops designed to meet the specific needs of a particular group of teachers, principals, or parent coordinators. Individual will supervise and support other staff and volunteers in their participation in these programs, collaborate with teacher volunteers in the creation of resource materials, work with staff throughout the Museum to coordinate all logistical aspects of teacher programs, and manage some aspects of and teach in a school partnership program. The Senior Museum Educator will also conduct research to develop syllabi and reading lists for teacher services programs and disseminate supporting material and logistics to Museum staff. Individual will help evaluate teacher services at the Museum and present findings at departmental meetings. This position reports to the School Programs Manager.”

The Brooklyn Museum is also looking to hire a Senior Museum Educator, Gallery/Studio Program Coordinator for the Museum’s Education, Youth and Family Programs (also a Union-covered position). According to their website:
“Responsibilities: The Senior Museum Educator will be responsible for conceiving, implementing, and managing the Gallery/Studio Program, an art class series for students ages six to adult that uses the Museum's collections as a resource for learning in the arts. Responsibilities include hiring, training, and supervising part-time staff; course development; preparing marketing materials; installing three student exhibitions annually; administrative oversight; and evaluation and assessment of the program. The Senior Museum Educator will also be responsible for teaching school groups in the galleries and will assist with the preparation of grant proposals and establishing budgets. Collaboration with other Museum staff as well as outside organizations is expected. The position is considered a mentoring position for other educators in the institution. Individual will report to the Youth and Family Programs Manager. Implementation of programs will require weekend work.”
