Using social networks for job hunting

An overlooked resource for job hunting is social network sites. I discovered that Twitter, Facebook , Myspace and Craig's List all offer job hunting pages/listings. For example, on Facebook and Myspace’s search bar, I typed in “Jobs,” and both gave me over 500 pages. Of course, not all of the pages are suitable job-hunting resources but many are and are worth checking out.

Going by the adage, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” is always a good rule of thumb to adhere to. Anytime you are using an internet site for job hunting, it is advisable to verify the sites integrity before submitting any personal information. If possible, become a fan and or follower of the site and monitor the posts for a month or so. This will give you an idea of the types of things that are being listed.

A good example of why you should "play it safe" is posted on the Southern Illinois Craig’s list. When you access the “Jobs” category, a “Scam Alert” comes up before you can get into the actual job listings. It is advisable to read it thoroughly before proceeding. Find a job listing that interests you and follow the link. See what types of things are required to get details about the position.

The great thing about this type of source is that you can be specific in your search by naming the state or even the type of job you are seeking. Again, be prepared before you apply, even when applying online. Most places will require a resume, be sure you have a current one stored on the computer you are using, if possible. This allows you to complete the process more quickly.

Because I am from a rural community in Southern Illinois, I find the internet to be my most valuable job hunting resource. It allows me to apply in markets that I may not be privy to otherwise.
