Local authors Bill Tammeus and Rabbi Jacques Cukierkorn have collaborated on a new book about Jews in Poland who were rescued by non-Jews during the Holocaust entitled They were Just People: Stories of Rescue in Poland during the Holocaust.
Bill Tammeus, a former reporter, editorial page columnist and faith columnist for the
Kansas City Star, currently writes
“Faith Matters”, a weblog. He is also the author of the
The Gift of Meaning (University of Missouri Press).
Rabbi Jacques Cukierkorn is the spiritual leader of the
New Reform Temple in Kansas City, Missouri. Rabbi Cukierkorn is one of the founders of
Kulanu, an organization which “helps dispersed and emerging Jewish communities” and is the author of HaMadrij, a guide to Judaism in Spanish. He is from Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The new book will be launched on Thursday, September 10 in the auditorium of the Plaza branch of the Kansas City Public Library, 4801 Main Street. Several of the people whose stories are in the book will also participate in the event and books will be available for sale.
A second event will be held on Sunday, September 13 in the sanctuary of Community Christian Church, 4601 Main Street in Kansas City, MO.
The book, which includes a study guide, will be published on September 3 by the University of Missouri Press.
