Touro University Sponsors Teen Life Conference - March 11, 2010

Touro University, Mare Island, CA

Do you know that we have a Jewish University in the Bay Area? Touro is a system of Jewish-sponsored non-profit institutions of higher and professional education. Touro University California, and its Nevada branch campus, as well as Touro College Los Angeles, are accredited institutions governed by the Touro College Board of Trustees, which was established in 1971 primarily to enrich the Jewish heritage and serve the larger American community. Approximately 17,500 students are currently enrolled in its various schools and divisions. Touro College has branch campuses, locations and instructional sites in New York, as well as branch campuses and programs in Berlin, Jerusalem, Moscow, Paris and Florida.

I would like to extend my condolences on the recent passing of Touro's founder, Rabbi Dr. Bernard Lander, may his memory be a blessing.

Touro medical students will hold their fourth annual Teen Life Conference on campus on Thursday March 11 from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Teen Life conference is a health fair in which Touro students bus local high school students to Mare Island and provide them with health care advice. The conference educates teens about diet and exercise, stress management, drugs, alcohol, teen pregnancy, and health and nutrition. Students come from Jesse Bethel, Hogan, Vallejo, Peoples, St. Patrick’s and St. Vincent’s high schools. Also participating are Mare Island Technology Academy, North Hills and HOPE School. Prior Teen Conferences have attracted nearly 300 participants with Touro students recruiting the support of local businesses through tickets for free meals from restaurants and other services.

Driving to the campus is an adventure in and of itself. Located deep in the heart of Mare Island, a former naval base that at one time employed 40,000 workers per day, the island is now home to an eclectic array of buildings, dockage, and birds. If you don't have the opportunity to attend the conference, visit Mare Island for some Bay Area history.
