Keeping kosher in Colorado

There are many reasons why people decide to keep kosher. For some, it is a tradition that has run in the family for generations. Others will tell you that they do it for dietary reasons, because abstaining from eating pork and not mixing meat and dairy results in a healthier diet. Still others do it because it is the word of God and they follow Halacha (Jewish law) by the book.

Personally, I keep kosher because it connects me to my Judaism. It can often be difficult to find ways to feel Jewish during the modern adults busy schedule. Sometimes, it feels like eating is the only thing I do with any sort of regularity. So, before I sit down to eat, I remind myself to take a few deep breaths, say a prayer of thanks for the food in front of me, and stop to think if what I am eating is kosher or not. That way I can feel connected to my Judaism at least three times every day.

I won't say that I’ve never eaten pork or I don’t sneak in the occasional chicken dinner with buttered mashed potatoes. But I do acknowledge at those times that what I am doing is not kosher and simply by recognizing that fact I feel a strengthened connection to my religion.

Of course, this is not to say that there is any right or wrong reason to keep kosher. We all do what we feel is right for us. That's one of the beauties of Judaism.

It can be difficult to keep kosher in the Denver Metro area, so here are a few places to go if you have any questions or are just looking for a nice kosher steak.

-The East Side Kosher Deli is the best and the biggest place to get kosher meat in Denver. According to their website, they have a 20,000 square foot facility that serves Jewish communities across seven different states. They also have a kosher restaurant that serves a variety of Jewish favorites and can deliver to anywhere in the Denver metro area. Their number is: 303-322-9862.

- Leah's Kosher Cafe is located in Aurora and can be contacted at: 303-750-9400

- Boulder has no kosher restaurants but does have a kosher store that sells Israeli products and kosher meats. The store is located in the Boulder JCC and can be reached for an appointment at: 303-494-1638.

- Many King Sooper’s and Whole foods in the Denver metro area have either kosher meat in the butcher section, or an entire isle reserved for kosher foods.

- There are three liqour stores in Denver with kosher wine sections: Fortune Liquor, Grapevine Liquors, and Lowry Liquors.

So where are some of those Kosher vending machines located? How can a temple get a hold of one?
