On February 15th, 2009, Joe Cuba, father of latin boogaloo, passed away at the age of 77. To commemorate the one year anniversary of his passing as well as the upcoming release of his album El Alcalde Del Barrio the legendary musician will be paid tribute this Thursday, February 11, by Chico Mann at the Elbo Room in San Francisco. The release party begins at 9:30 PM and will feature giveaways of shirts and cds from Fania Records.
Joe Cuba (born Gilberto Navarro) was named the Father of Latin Boogaloo after the unprecedented success he achieved with the style, a cross between R&B and soul with mambo and son montuno, in the 1960s. Cuba's career includes 240 recorded titles and performances at Carnegie Hall, The Apollo Theater, Hollywood Palladium, Madison Square Garden and the 1964 World's Fair. His legacy is still present in today's latin jazz scene as musicians, like Chico Mann, present the boolgaloo style with a modern intensity and relevance. The night is sure to be filled with fantastic latin jazz music and is a great chance to grab the new cd which will be reviewed on The Examiner shortly. If you make it out to the show, be sure to leave your comments and reviews here and continue spreading the word about great jazz music in the bay area.
