The news this morning that C-SPAN has placed its entire video archives on the web will surely stir the hearts of policy wonks, politics junkies and would-be historians from coast to coast.
The average jazz fan? Well, not so much.
But hold it there a minute. Turns out, there’s plenty of jazz-related video on the C-SPAN site from which you can derive a broader knowledge of the music, its history and social impact.
A quick perusal of the offerings turned up an “American Profile” interview of Rep. John Conyers in which he discusses his love of jazz; Ken Burns delivering a talk on his “Jazz” documentary; a Clinton Administration program titled “Jazz: An Expression in Democracy”; footage from the Newport and Jacksonville festivals; Wynton Marsalis at the National Press Club discussing “Teaching Young People About Jazz”; and “Booknotes” sessions with Nat Hentoff, Leonard Garment, Andrea Crouch that all touched on the music. There’s also an interview with Pete Fountain and a talk by Rowena Stewart, director of the American Jazz Museum.
