Yoshi’s in Oakland is Bay Area’s leading venue for live jazz … and jazz-centered benefit concerts.
As noted in an earlier posting, April 27 brings a benefit for long-time East Bay jazz luminary Khalil Shaheed. The event’s lineup has expanded in recent weeks to include Bobby Hutcherson, Dayna Stephens and the Oaktown Jazz Workshop All Stars, Eddie Gale, John Handy, Kenny Washington, Mo'Rockin' Project, John Santos, Oscar Brashear, George Cables, Winard Harper and Najee. Tickets are $20.
This afternoon brought news of another such concert, this one set for May 15 and benefiting Mike Cogan. He has operated Bay Records studio for the past 38 years and is now facing a significant health crisis.
The evening will feature Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers, John Santos Sextet, Clairdee with the Ken French Trio, Anton Schwartz Quintet featuring Wayne Wallace, Ed Reed and his trio, Leon Oakley’s Friends of Jazz, Nika Rejto and Joe Gilman, among others. Tickets are $20.
Suffice it to say, cheers to both Yoshi’s and the fine talents involved for making these benefits happen.
