Shawn Colvin shows her emotional range (and a serious shoe fetish) Monday night at Yoshi's San Francisco.
Opening a four-night run at the club Monday, Colvin loaded every song with considerable emotional weight, whether she was recalling a misfiring love affair in "Shotgun Down the Avalanche" or doing a little arson/murder fantasizing in her breakthrough hit, "Sunny Came Home." Performing with nothing more than her ever-expanding acoustic guitar chops to back her up, Colvin was seldom less than riveting.
Even within the cozy confines of folk music, few performers can match her ability to establish a direct emotional connection with the audience. You get the feeling she could sing "Boola Boola" and make it sound like a confession ripped straight from her heart.
Which is almost what Colvin did Monday, dishing up a version of the Gnarls Barkley part anthem "Crazy" that replaced the original's funky swagger with earnest angst. And pulling it off!
It's a gift, no doubt. One that I might more typically associate with an opera singer, but you take what can get.
And when Colvin is tackling a song worthy of the gravitas she can load it with, such as her original "Another Round of Blues" and her cover of Tom Wait's "Hold On," what you get is mighty impressive.
Colvin performs at 8 p.m. tonight through Thursday. Tickets are $30.
