In a recent announcement from the Johnny’s and Associates office, NEWS group members Ryo Nishikido and Tomohisa Yamashita have been diagnosed with influenza A, which could possibly be the H1N1 strain. According to Japanese news sources, Nishikido was diagnosed on the 31st and Yamashita the day after. The two are advised to take a break from their work schedule and recuperate at their homes.
Their management greatly apologizes for the inconvenience their illnesses have caused.
Because of Nishikido and Yamashita’s conditions their dramas, Orthros no Inu (Nishikido) and Buzzer Beat (Yamashita) might have to face some delays in filming. According to TBS, Nishikido’s scenes in the upcoming seventh episode of Orthros no Inu might have to be altered pending on the actor’s recovery. On a similar note according to Fuji TV, Yamashita’s scenes for next week’s Buzzer Beat episode have yet to be filmed as well.
With the Fall drama line-up already in place, it is highly unlikely that either drama would gain extensions. There might be some major changes to the plot, which may or may not be detrimental to the quality of the show. Orthros no Inu might be able to regroup and tighten their pacing of the plot because of Nishikido’s absence or they would continue meandering the story line and playing with familiar drama tropes. The drama could delve more into revealing the secrets of the characters and their motivations, as opposed to continuing the cycle of confusing the viewing.
Yamashita’s drama Buzzer Beat on the other hand, finds itself without its leading man. It is definitely unwise to do major alterations to the plot now that it has progressed to its ninth episode. Would they diminish his role? Would the drama itself be cut short because of Yamashita’s illness? It would definitely be a shame if this drama veers to contrived plot lines because it has developed into such an enjoyable drama to watch. I hope that the creative directors find a way to maneuver around these circumstances.
As for Nishikido and Yamashita, I hope they have a swift and safe recovery.
