A station plaza lit up pink for breast cancer awareness
Japan has gone pink this month in support of breast cancer awareness. While groups around the country call for regular breast examinations with pink ribbons, some of the most stunning examples of promotion for the cause are from buildings that are taking on a pink hue for a limited time.
Pink Japanese Castles
Kochi, Kokura, Nagoya, and Toyama castles have all reportedly been lit up pink in the evening hours this month. The spotlights that normally light up the castles have been given pink filters to create the simple, yet brilliant effect.
The unusual color (for a castle) causes people to stop in their tracks to gaze. A report from the Chunichi newspaper described how women returning from work immediately started shouting about how beautiful it was when they first saw Toyama castle glowing pink.
Pink Buildings
Other structures have also been going pink, such as the city office in Yonezawa and a steel electrical tower in Morioka city. The company that owns the tower, Tohoku Electric Power Co. told Sankei News, “If our light up raises the awareness of breast cancer in even one person, we’ll be happy.”
Tokyo Tower even went pink for a day to show support!
If you are traveling Japan this month, keep an eye out for pinkness being spread around the country and remember the good cause!
