Ever wished for a private island in Japan? Well, now’s the chance; the Chugoku Local Finance Bureau announced on Dec. 11th that they will be auctioning off a small uninhabited island in the Seto Inland Sea.
The island for sale is the northern portion of a set of islands called Mitsugo-jima and is located in Hiroshima Prefecture, approximately 15 miles from Hiroshima City. It is gourd-shaped and approximately 7600 square meters in area.
The island is reportedly being sold as part of a national effort to liquidate unused state land. The Kure City Branch of the Finance Bureau, which is in charge of the island and its sale, told reporters, “We’ve never heard of a case within the records of the Ministry of Finance of an uninhabited island being auctioned off like this.”
The Bureau is promoting the island as a great place to fish, relax, and experience the beauty of the Seto Inland Sea, the Yomiuri reported.
However, the island does have some potential problems. It was used before WWII as a “disinfection station” for the Japanese navy. The island’s soil may be polluted with mercury-based chemicals, but the Bureau has refrained from conducting an investigation due to cost. Also, since the island is located within the Seto Inland Sea National Park, building and repairs of any kind would have to follow strict regulations, the Yomiuri reported.
Bids for the island will be accepted from Dec. 15th to Feb. 9th, according to Sankei News.
