Police report rough start to the new year

The year has taken off to a rough start with a number of non-fatal shootings.  Those shootings seem to be associated with individuals who have, what Commanding Officer Marmara calls, “a personal beef”.  The precinct is reporting some traction on those cases based on leads.

The 113th has made progress it its fight against burglaries and robberies have been a big problem the last few months.  Dunkin Donuts and cell phone stores in the area have recently been the target of robberies.  The precinct has put units in the vicinity of the incidents and has asked store managers to take preventive measures.

There is a concern with the increase in domestic violence cases.  To that end, Commander Marmara asked residents to check in with neighbors.  Look for bruises or report areas where there is a lot of arguing going on.  The 113th precinct has a dedicated unit available to the issue if assistance is available.  The Commander noted those services need not be prison, but places that can offer assistance.

The addition of 70 impact officers to the precinct was announced.  The officers are recent academy trainees and will begin their tours along Baisley Boulevard from Rockaway to Merrick Boulevards.  They will also be placed throughout the precinct where necessary including key areas along Linden Boulevard.  Commander Marmara believes it is a good opportunity to expose the new officers to residents and vice versa.  Many of the new officers joined the meeting and received a hearty welcome from residents.

Back from celebrating the holidays where the council distributed gifts to over 400 children, the 113th Precinct wished everyone a Happy New Year.

Community Council meetings are the third Monday of the month, but residents should not feel they must wait until the meeting to address their concerns.  Contact the precinct or sign up for their email blasts at communityaffairs113th@gmail.com
