York College hosted a Health Fair Saturday in conjunction with New York State Senator Shirley Huntley, Project Hope and The Epsilon Pi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. The well attended event highlighted how much the subject of health care is top of minds for individuals as the government grapples with the issue. The event included booths from various aspects of the health spectrum including mental health, nutrition, outreach for the disabled, elder care, stress and keeping a healthy home. There was information available on Sickle Cell Anemia, various Health Insurance Plans, and government programs including those for post natal women.
There was free screenings for dental, blood pressure and sugar levels all of which went quickly with short wait times. HIV testing was also available with results delivered within twenty minutes. Informational workshops on healthy relationships and sexually transmitted infections rounded out the event.
Giveaways were more than just a pen or stress ball. Participants could receive a full stop smoking program pack covering a two month period of patches and/or gum, fiber rich cereals, toothpaste and energy drink samples. A massage table helped individuals unwind while learning about stress. The State Comptrollers office had two representatives doing quick searches to find out if inquirers had unclaimed state money (they found nothing for me!). And Sheila Hawkins from the Silver Sneaker fitness program, a program that supplies gym memberships and exercise programs for the elderly, gave an exercise class right in the middle of it all. The high energy, low impact session had even passersby joining in and those nearby moving in their seats.
Participants were happy with the array of services and available information with stuffed plastic bags and happy faces as proof. Future health fairs have not as yet been scheduled. York College is located at Guy R. Brewer Boulevard between Archer and Liberty Avenues.
