The Mythopoeic Society has announced its 2009 finalists for the The Mythopoeic Scholarship Award in Inklings Studies.
The award is given to books on J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, or Charles Williams that make significant contributions to Inklings scholarship. The Inklings was an informal literary discussion group at the University of Oxford in the 1930s and 40s. Notable members included Tolkien, Lewis, Williams, Tolkien's son Christopher, Lewis' brother Warren, and a number of notable Oxford academics.

The Evolution of Tolkien’s Mythology: A Study of the History of Middle-earth by E. A. Whittingham (McFarland, 2008).
The Society also gives annual awards for Adult and Childrens' Fantasy, and for Myth and Fantasy Studies.
Founded in Los Angeles in 1967, The Mythopoeic Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the study of mythopoeia, fantasy and mythic literature.
Tolkien coined the word "mythopoeia" in the 1930s, to refer to the literary creation of an imaginary world, inspired by real-world mythology, that includes the invention of cosmology, geography, history, society and language. Tolkien's own Legendarium, his Middle Earth universe, is to date the most famous example.
