Italian white wines have had a historically bad reputation. And it is so unmerited. There are lots of gorgeous, and food friendly, whites out there that deserve some attention. Some of them have a definite acid structure, which is beloved in Italy, for how well it pairs with foods. It can be more of a challenge here given the American palate's more easy-going style. One of my classic favorites is Arneis, from Piedmonte, in Northwest Italy. Lean, clean and aromatic: this wine is a winner before dinner and with salads, apps and seafood.
A couple that you can enjoy around the country include the 2009 Marco Porello Roero Arneis and the 2009 Vietti Roero Arneis at Perbacco in San Francisco. And the Cascina Pioiero Roero Arneis 2009 from Sassi in Scottsdale.
