It is not often easy to make great wines from Italian grape varietals on California soil. It may be trendy, however it often doesn't work out the way in which it is intended to. However a handful of producers are fast learners. However Rosa d'Oro does a stellar job. They are one of a handful of great wines I had a chance to try at the Lake County Wine Tasting a couple of days ago on Treasure Island. The winery's Barbera was lush and satisifying and the Nebbiolo, lean clean and typical to Piedmontese style. They also make olive oil and vinegars. Family member Pietro Buttitta explained to me that his family hails from Palermo, one of my favorite places to eat and drink. He joked that many might not consider the island of Sicily to really be part of Italy, which is debatable. So is a Nero d'Avola or Frappato next to honor the family roots?
