The U.S. has just rescued a few dozen Yemenite Jews. Although Israel had airlifted 49,000, early in its statehood, a couple of thousand remained. For the past few decades, this remainder was stuck there and intimidated from outside contacts. “For three decades there were no telephone calls, no letters, no traveling overseas. Few people outside of Israel even knew of their existence.
With the recent civil wars in Yemen and Israeli combat in Gaza has come antisemitism among the masses, not the government. Yemenite Muslims accuse Jews of working for Israel and of corrupting Muslim morals. Jews mostly are afraid to leave their houses. When they do, they dress as Muslims, so as not to be easily identifiable (Miriam Jordan, Wall St. J., 11/1, A1).
Muslim Arab persecution of Jews never has ended. How foolish and paranoid to accuse the beleaguered Yemenite Jews of aiding Israel and corrupting Muslim morals! Those Muslims could do a lot for their morals by stopping their persecution.
Why did the U.S. undertake the rescue? Free or for some concession?
